Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel – Coastal Farmhouse Style

Learn how we remodeled our outdated kitchen into the coastal farmhouse kitchen of our dreams!

I’ve been dreaming of a pretty coastal style farmhouse kitchen for so long. When we purchased our little cottage by the sea almost 11 years ago, the kitchen was the worst part; it was horrendous!  The cabinets were those 70’s cabinets with orange-y wood with grooves on the doors.  Someone along the way decided to spice them up a bit by taking a black sharpee and coloring the grooves…seriously.

There was a huge greasy ceiling fan, stained white counter tops with gold specks in them (James called them Goldschlager counters) and a teeny little refrigerator that may have been older than me. Oh, and a cowboy wall.  Really, a cowboy wall complete with spindles and quarter round wagon wheel things in the corners (the cowboy wall was the first thing to get ripped out, I don’t think it made it through our first day here).

Yee-haw!

We lived with the kitchen like that for a little while then did some budget friendly get-me-through projects like painting the counters and the cabinets and removing the fan.

Fast forward 10 years and our kitchen is finally the coastal style farmhouse kitchen of my dreams!

white and bright coastal farmhouse kitchen remodel

Much better, right?!

How to create a coastal farmhouse kitchen

  • use white bead board for back splash
  • light breezy curtains (ours are Pottery Barn napkins!)
  • coastal colors – white, blues and wood tones are my favorite way to add coastal farmhouse touches
  • fun coastal accents – just a few, it’s easy to go overboard!
  • vintage blue Ball jars have coastal and farmhouse vibes

Stainless Steel Sink  //  Cabinet Knobs  // Drawer Pulls  //  Wooden Cutting Board

Since we have board and batten around the living and dining areas we decided to continue that look (and save a bundle) by using white bead board for the back splash.  I was worried it would be difficult to keep clean but so far so good.

Right now we have cute coastal style Pottery Barn napkins as curtains.  They are easy to change up as the seasons change.

New counter tops, sink and faucet made a huge difference in brightening up the space.

Inexpensive ways to update your kitchen

  • update rather than replace wooden kitchen cabinets
  • add farmhouse style with glass canisters and wooden bowls/cutting boards
  • replace window trim with coastal farmhouse style wood painted to match other trim
  • Update or replace lighting- this can have a major impact on your space without breaking your budget

The funky sharpee grooves on the cabinet doors were covered with trim molding, we added more molding to the bottom of the cabinets and painted them White Dove to match the trim throughout the house.

Oil rubbed bronze handles and knobs were added to all the cabinets and drawers.

Fun touches like the whimsical whale cutting board add coastal style while our vintage baby bottle soap dispenser brings a touch of farmhouse kitchen comfort.

Our open shelving is one of my favorite parts of the kitchen.  James and I installed it a while ago and just added some new accessories.

The rustic island made from reclaimed wood is one of the first things you see when you walk in our house.

We painted wooden stools from Target to go along with it’s distressed look.

    Hi
I love this makeover!! We are getting ready to paint our cabinets with Benjamin Moore Advance paint in either simply white or white dove. I have read many posts about the paint yellowing….have you had an issue with the paint on your cabinets yellowing??? Thanks

I haven’t had any issues with it yellowing. I used Porter brand paint. Hope that helps ๐Ÿ™‚

What do you mean by “funky sharpee grooves”? I’m having a hard time picturing the before look in that detail. Awesome result though!

lol, the cabinets originally had those grooves in them that were so popular in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Over time one of the owners had an idea to draw in the grooves with a black marker so they would pop. Not sure if you can see it well in the before pic but it was pretty bad looking!

Love this look? May I ask what the counters are? They blend in so well. The plank island is awesome! Congratulations.

Thanks Nan! I love the counters too and to be honest, I didn’t think I would! They are stock counter tops from Lowe’s! Since we were on a pretty tight budget we decided to look at them and bought a small piece to try out. All the way home I was thinking “I am not going to like this at all!” because I really had my heart set of recycled glass counters. James layed it on top of the counter we had and when I walked in I couldn’t believe how much I LOVED it! If you would like the name let me know and I will look it up for you ๐Ÿ™‚
